Day of Service aka DOS is held every 3rd Saturday of each month from 10:30am - 3:00pm; we partner with others to not only be "Service Without Walls" but to do "Service Without Walls".
During the DOS we serve the community experiencing homelessness, poverty and hunger with free necessary items and services. Some items we share during DOS are essential hygiene products such as: soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush and toilet paper as well as an immediate meal/snack for right then (usually hot dogs/hamburgers) as well as survival food items such as crackers, cookies, juice and water. Sometimes we are able to, purchase or are donated items the community can take with them for later such as: canned tuna, boxed/canned macaroni/spaghetti, canned chicken/meat, etc. In addition, we usually have a supply of body wash, socks, underwear, seasonally appropriate clothing, jackets, sweaters, coats, gloves, scarves and also shoes.
Some of the services we offer during the DOS is prayer, resource referrals, clothing referrals and free haircuts. In addition, we have established a system to mentor men, women and teens interested in mentoring, living skills training, job/resume prep, income tax counseling/review, health/wellness referrals and more through an ever growing network of professionals, volunteer servants, businesses and other non profits.
Lastly our DOS' are themed during three (3) months April, August and November. During the month of April we celebrate the Day of Service as "Rising up Love" for those who choose to celebrate the gift of Christ being risen in love for the remission of sin, others celebrate Easter Sunday but we all celebrate together as we Rise up Love. In the month of August we Serve Up Love as the Executive Board Members for Service Without Walls from near and far come to serve those they represent in meetings all year long. Some live in town but others do not and are not able to physically serve on a regular basis therefore we set aside this one month to serve together during the DOS, followed by our Annual Serving Up Love Dinner to thank our supporters/donors, invite new/perspective donors to share our successes for the year and the vision for the upcoming year. We also utilize the opportunity to raise funds for the upcoming year. In the month of November we serve a Harvest Feast which consists of a full "Thanksgiving style" meal including Turkey (donated by Covetrus) and sides contributed by many different groups, individuals, non profits and businesses. Usually all of the tradition sides are covered as well as some non traditional dishes. Our guests leave full, satisfied, thankful, loved and encouraged as do we.
